Every time you start your car, your catalytic converter gets to work removing the pollutants from the vehicle exhaust. It’s a small part that packs a big punch if you need to have it replaced. That’s because it contains a catalyst that’s made up of expensive metals, typically platinum and palladium.  There are some things you can do as preventive maintenance. It’s also a good idea to know the signs and symptoms of a catalytic converter that is failing.

Because it contains precious metals, it can be quite expensive to replace the catalytic converter. You may need to replace the catalytic converter if you notice any of the following:

  • Poor engine performance like reduced gas mileage, engine stalling, hesitation and/or misfiring. Substandard engine performance doesn’t always indicate you need to replace the catalytic converter, but if you don’t take care of the problem that’s causing these issues, it may end up having to be replaced. For example, problems within the fuel system can create issues that cause a blockage in the catalytic converter. A clogged catalytic converter exhibit the signs of poor engine performance mentioned.
  • The Service Engine Soon or Check Engine warning light turns on. This could be a simple problem to fix or it could mean the catalytic converter needs to be replaced.  Either way, have it checked out right away. (Click here to learn more about the Check Engine light and what it’s telling you.)
  • There’s a rattling noise coming from underneath your vehicle. The chemicals begin to break down as the catalytic converter ages. The pieces of chemical catalyst will begin to rattle as you drive your vehicle. They can even cause a blockage in the exhaust system that prevents or restricts the flow of exhaust through the system.
  • The exhaust smells like rotten eggs.

Preventive Maintenance Can Help You Avoid Problems with the Catalytic Converter

  1. Make sure the engine is performing properly by having the engine tuned up regularly. Anything that affects the combustion of the fuel/air mixture will affect the exhaust that comes out of your vehicle. Bad spark plugs and wires, a faulty oxygen sensor, failing fuel sensors or filters can all lead to engine performance issues that can cause problems with the catalytic converter. Don’t know how often you should have an engine tune-up done? Our certified technicians will let you know.
  2. Never ignore the Check Engine light. It could be something as simple as a faulty gas cap, but if left unresolved could lead to serious engine damage including replacement of the expensive catalytic converter.
