Today’s vehicles are quite sophisticated with computer controls designed to alert you to potential problems. Advanced technology in fluids has also improved engine performance, but you have to stay up-to-date with your maintenance schedules for those fluids to do their jobs properly. Often times, we end up forgoing maintenance because the car is running great. Unfortunately, if one of your warning lights comes on it often indicates a problem that could have been taken care of earlier.

It’s important to be aware of what is going on with your vehicle. If you notice anything out of the norm, good chances you need to have it serviced. Here are some clues you can use to let you know something is not quite right:

  • Does it “look” like trouble? Notice any stains under your vehicle? Yellowish-green, pastel blue or fluorescent orange fluid under the front of your vehicle most likely indicates a problem with the engine cooling system. Dark brown or black fluid is typical of an oil leak and red fluid could be a leak in your transmission or power steering system. Have any leaks, no matter how small, checked out by your mechanic. If any one of these systems fails while you are driving, you could incur serious engine damage.
  • What’s that smell? A smell like burned toast generally indicates an electrical issue or burning insulation. The smell of rotten eggs could mean a problem with the catalytic converter or emissions system. Smell gasoline? Or, does it smell like something sweet (a potential problem with the heating and/or cooling system)? Odors are a good signal that something’s not quite right and you should bring your vehicle in for a check-up.
  • Is that sound coming from my car? Squealing, knocking, clunking, screeching, pinging, scraping, rumbling – these sounds are not good. Try to notice from where the sound is coming. Also take note of when it happens (e.g. when stopping, accelerating, etc.).
  • Why does my vehicle “feel” funny? If you are having difficulty handling your vehicle, it’s riding roughly, it’s hard to steer, you notice a vibration or it’s pulling to one side, there’s a problem. This could be something as simple as needing a tire alignment and balancing or it could be something much more serious like a motor mount that is wearing or a steering system problem. Again, you will want to take not of when you are feeling a symptom in your vehicle.
